Paul Lysaught or Lysaght

While researching some of Grandma’s family I have noticed first hand how surnames change, and why they change.  Don’t get me wronged, I fully believe Grandma thinks she knows what she is talking about, but its hard not to believe the fine print that has been around for a really long time.

Like Lysaught, Grandma thinks this is the correct spelling of her ancestor.  However, I have not found this spelling to exist within this family tree.  I have only been able to find Lysaght.  Having this conversation is not an easy one.  First she is not my biological Grandmother, and believing me with regard to her family history is very difficult for her to imagine. Second, she is a very strong minded women (which I love, but not when I am right).  So I am spending most of the time researching the family name.

Paul Lysaught or Lysaght, was a young boy when his mother married a man named Jasper Newton Cantey.  Paul and his brother Charles, became stepchildren to this man.  I know that they had brothers and sisters however, I have not been able to obtain birth years for them so I am unsure if they are half or step I do know that they are Jasper’s biological children.  Jasper and Paul’s mother Caroline or Carrie were both married prior to there nuptials.  I have been unable to locate Carrie’s first husband Lysaght and I am still actively looking.  Jasper’s first wife had died in childbirth from what I have been able to recover.  I am not sure if the child died as well.

The only source I currently have is the 1880 Census or Allendale Barnwell, South Carolina.

Because Paul was born in 1876, there is only one Census that remains (well that I have found) because of the loss of 1890 Census, the next one I have is 1900, and he was already married to Florence Eugenia Munn.

My goal today is to get to the bottom of the marriage of Caroline Elizabeth Carrie Lysaght Canty, I believe her maiden name was Jones.  So I will be going through marriage documents to find a connection between her and her first husband.
